Solid Tiger Maple Keeping Chest with applied moldings and ogee bracket feet. Style is Queen Anne “ish” (according to the box designer and woodworker Charles Neil). The finish is several coats of NGR dye and stain. Topcoat is satin water-based from General Finishes which was then rubbed to a semi gloss sheen.

Ace's paitence and determination truly show in his work
Thanks for the support guys, working with highly figured wood like that was a first for me. Still have chip-out nightmares.

I is wonderful to see someone take the time to go through large stacks of material and pick out such a beautiful piece and them turn it into something as beautiful as Southern keeper box. The detail is great, and the feet are outstanding. Some day I hope I have the patience and skill to do this level of craftsmanship.

In all honesty I can only take credit for the last part of your statement. My friend, Bob Kloes of Wisconsin, Give him the credit for the beautiful Tiger Maple. He has many species of U.S. hardwoods on hand.
Just go to his website BobKloes.com
Like I said, this is the first time for me using a highly figured wood, took it slow. I had only one chance to get it right. Or the box would keep getting smaller and smaller.

Well the contest is over, rats I didn't win :)
I would like to give a special thanks to professional woodworker Charles Neil. For all the help you have given to me and many others through your educational woodworking DVD's. You have an amazing gift in your ability to teach me and others like me. You make the complicated uncomplicated.
Thanks to everyone at the Charles Neil Woodworking Forum for the support.
Thanks to Bob Kloes (BigBob on the forum) for the beautiful wide tiger maple boards, the maples do grow nice up in the North.
Thanks to Charles Neil (again) for the kick in the pants to give water based finishes a try, I wouldn't of believed for a moment they were that good (well certain ones hehehehe)
Will get em next time!

just beautiful ace. i know what you mean about chip out nightmares. mine is out of figured walnut and i have bad dreams about it and wake up screaming just about every night now. its hard to tame a tiger ;)
Great piece Ace. The Queen Anne style feet work very well with this piece. Beautiful tiger maple figure and fantastic clarity from both stain and finish you used. Keep up the great work!
