When ever I visited my father’s parents, we always played with a pencil puzzle box that had been given to my Grandfather by his father and then passed down to my Dad and now my sister. I recently had a chance to take dimensions and photos and decided it would be an interesting entry for your “Build Outside The Box” Contest.
Materials: Spalted Maple
Dimensions: 8 ¾’l x 2”h x 1 ¾”w
Finish: Boiled Linseed Oil
Construction time: 4 days.
Construction Approach:
Since the original was cut and hand carved from a single block of wood, this box was created by starting with a single block of wood (see photo). Though a table saw and band saw were used to dimension the wood pieces, the 10 individual pieces were cut, shaped and or carved by hand. The box interior was drilled out and completed with chisels and scraper.
I chose a simple finish to give it an aged and warm glow.
