Plant Table

 

One thing that I think I can never get away from is the beautiful natural contrast of using different woods with no stain. When I first built this table it was of one kind of stock, strait legged and very square looking. So I started using inserts and inlays of different woods and trying to design a different style of legs to bring it to life.

The legs and eight side panels must be square for the table to assemble properly. The legs are glued at 45 degrees into the slots cut into both sides of each side panel which makes for a large gluing surface and very strong assembly. I strap clamp all 4 legs and 8 side panels at one time and then reassure strength by gluing and screwing blocks at 45 degrees to the inside of each leg holding the side panels to the legs.

I made the top and bottom glass frames from the same stock as the legs and cut for the inlays and rout the insides to accept ¼” glass.

 

The Table is made from Walnut and Oak. I felt pretty lucky to find a piece of Oak that was, though difficult to work with, had a unique swirl to it with a darker grain and some red mixed in. I don’t know what you would call this, crotch, burl? Maybe it’s not even oak?
