Coachmakers Rabbet Plane
I was inspired by an article in a 1987 FWW to build this plane. It is a reproduction of a type used by 19th century artisans. The body is made from Purpleheart and I ground the blade from a 3/4″ spade bit. It seems to hold an edge reasonably well. The hardest part of construction was cutting the 1/4″ mortise for the tang of the blade. Making the plane was soulfood and it is a joy to use.

Beautiful!
That is the best looking(prettiest) tool I have ever seen! How can you stand to actually use it?
Bravo! Functional art at it's finest.
Well now! It be a small world when two fellow South Africans meet in such illustrious company. What a stunning little fellow you gave birth to. May he smooth your path as ye reach those heights. May they curl to the angels chippy.
