When I replaced my windows I kept the red cedar frames. After being exposed to the elements for forty years the staples and tracks were disintegrating, but the wood looked like new. I made this mailbox from them, and with several coats of spar varnish to further protect it from Ontario seasons, it is already outlasting the metal one it replaced.

Did you finish it with anything else besides Spar Varnish?
I'm currently working on a cedar planter box and was thinking of useing this same finish.
