Here is a tool cabinet I designed using AutoCad/Solid Edge and built back in August of 2008.

It’s made from Oak Plywood trimmed with Cherry. The carcasss has mitered corners which in turn have walnut dovetail splines. The box style doors feature 1/2″ thk Baltic Birch panels. The doors are 3″ deep and are made from cherry and held together with through dovetails. The panels are designed to hold larger/longer tools such as saws, rules, and braces.

The drawers fronts are made from Ambrosia Maple, while the secondary wood is mahagony. As you can see, the drawers are dovetailed. The drawers all have grooves on their sides and ride on soft maple rails.

This cabinet can comfortably hold more than 40 bench planes on the 4 shelves and in the 13 cubbies. However, many smaller planes can be stored in any of the 6 drawers. Three drawers are 3 1/4″ high x 16 1/8″ wide x 10″ deep and the other three are 2 1/2″ high x 16 1/8″ wide x 10″ deep.

Three of the shelves mentioned above will feature adjustable spacing. Blind holes drilled in the sides of the carcass will receive 1/4″ dia brass shelf pins. The default layout of the shelving will allow me to store large combination or specialty planes that require 8″ of headroom on one of the shelves. The rest are 6 1/2″

Since I’ve built this cabinet my shop has become MUCH more organized and a easier to work in.
