Cantilevered Bookshelf
This is my Cantilevered bookshelf. The design originated with the letter “F”. The shelves are designed to wedge themselves at specific heights on the tapered 7′ post. Each shelf slides down from the top and, to prevent lifting off, is fastened with a screw to the post. Then the screw is capped with a walnut plug.

Sensational design!
I am always so impressed when people can pull off cantilevered designs with such elan! This is a great balance (no pun intended!) between what looks like a very graceful, 'light' design and something of obvious strength and weight. Well done!
Beautiful design. How is it structurally fastened at the bottom?
hey rhenton,
The post fits through from the bottom of the base. Then I routed grooves across the base and post on the bottom. Then I glued splines in and it has held for 5 years now.
And Thanks for the compliment shavemaker.
Beautiful! Blaine, May I ask what is the angle you used and did you just select that angle because it looked right? Thanks.
Thanks Pilotjoe, I made this a few years ago and don't remember exactly, but I think I set the angle of the post according to how it looked. I did a few sketches and then set the post behind some boards that simulated the base and a couple of shelves. I adjusted the post until it looked correct and that was it. By the way I have a cousin named Joe who was a pilot.
