Modern Stacking Bookshelves
The construction is a 3D torsion box in that each wall is a separate MDF torsion box joined at the corners by half-lap joints. Then the frame was skinned with 1/4″ Birch Playwood. Finally, I built some poplar face frames which are joined on the 45 with a biscuit. This face frame was glued and clamped to the box. I sanded, applied a stain conditioner and then stained them with oil-based stain. They were then rubbed down with paste wax. There is about 40′ of white tube lights snaking behind the cabinets.

I like the concept of stacking shelves and you have realized the concept very nicely. The torsion-box construction yields the appearance of great solidity and mass, yet with less weight. Thus, the piece has an appealing architectural quality. I really like backlighting, too, because is adds dimension and visual contrast to the casework as a piece of art. (I infer this to mean that one cannot rearrange the shelves. I am just curious on this point because the shelving is already arranged perfectly.)
Great idea. Terrific work!
@Jurgen01: the rope light has clips which are screwed to the back of the cabinets in a consistent pattern. It would be pretty easy to rearrange the cabinets in a different pattern and then re-clip on the lights in the new arrangement.
Thanks so much for the kind comments.

This system has great artistic appeal. Lot's of work involved, but so it is with good woodworking.
Congratulations to this furniture builder, this is very demanding work and talk about being square , this proves it.
