Spalted, Quilted, Curly, Burly Maple
When I found this blank it was almost black. I took a scraper to it and found a gold mine of figure. I had never turned something square before but I couldn’t bare to cut the corners off of it. I couldn’t determine exactly what the figure of the wood was hence the name Spalted, Quilted, Curly, Burly Maple. One thing I did learn about turning square was……It can really bust your knuckles. The finish is just 6 coats of lacquer hand rubbed to a pumice stone and rotten stone grit. Then polished to a shine. BTW, Now I’ll put green tape on the edges to make them visible. 😎 I feel this is one of the most beautifully figured pieces of wood I’ve ever come across.
Please enjoy.

I don't know if I could have cut the corners off either. I know that feeling of finding a highly figured masterpiece sample of wood, especially maple. I have been tempted to hang entire boards on the wall. I think it teaches humility to find such beauty in something that some people might just toss in the fire. To feel unworthy to even cut the corners says a lot to me and I can relate. I didn't understand what you did at first but I see now how beautifully subtle the work you did. Wow, quite the potential to bust the knuckles. Good job!
Truly an homage to the glory of wood.
