Gant Capitol
The task was to carve a replacement capitol for the front porch of a farmehouse dateing from the 1820’s. The home owner supplied pictures of the originals, with measurements, and the replacement was made using that information. The carving was done in a series of glue ups, all mahogany, designed so that all the carved faces were edge grain. to accomplish the glue up, the mahogany was assembled as 6 sided units, which were then bandsawn down to rough shape. Beading was one layer, egg and dart another layer, and the cap and volutes another layer. After carving, the three layers were then assembled. All glue up was with 2 part epoxy, supported by stainless steel screws.
