walnut table with red date palm and walnut top
I bought a small board of red date palm at a woodworking store at a huge discount. The board had a severe twist which is probably why many others had passed on it. I thought it would be a fine learning experience to remove the twist. The fine learning experience turned into a battle. I used hand planes, electric handheld planes, and a portable planer to get this piece flat. I learned that I had to remove some material from the palm, then let the wood “rest” a while. Then repeat a little more the next day or so.
I dreamed of the palm being a unique table top to an all walnut table. Taking the twist out left me with a smaller table top that i wanted so I edge glued the two palm pieces to a strip of walnut.
The table body is walnut. I used mortise and tenon joinery and shaped it using rasps, files, and spokeshaves. The drawer sides are poplar with a walnut face. I used dovetail joints to make the drawer. A small walnut knot serves as a drawer pull.
I used Sam Malloof’s rub on poly/oil finish. I think I gave it about four or five coats.

It has a very organic look without being rustic. Very nicely done.
Very nice! I see Scandinavian and Maloof's influence.
Congrats to a beautiful piece.
I too noticed the Sam Maloof inspiration. It was confirmed once I read that you used his rub on poly/oil finish.
Nice job.
Beauty! Very inspirational design.

Beautiful work. Sam would be proud! You should be, too. Thanks for sharing.
What a great sleeper piece. Nothing that jumps right out at you but still draws you in with it's soft curves. It makes me want to touch it...a corner stone of Maloof's style. Nicely accomplished.
