Elegant Cocktail table.
A family friend just moved into the area and told me he was looking for a “bar” table. He wanted it to ejoy drinks with friends and have dinner with his wife out on the gazebo. He indicated that he couldn’t find anything that moved him in stores. He asked me to build him one. I took on my first comission half trembling and advised him it would take me a little while since i do have a day job. (Darn day job gets int he way of woodworking.)
So this is what i delivred to him. A nicely figured Sapele “bar” table. 42″ high with a 24″ Diameter top. Bent Lamination skirt made up of 3 section with Red Oak and Walnut accents at all the skirt joints.
Center column was simply turned round. The pomel at the base was a source of tears, sweat and few choice words. All 4 feet are mortised into the base. (Next time i think i’ll do a sliding dovetail as opposed to large deep mortises)
The table is attached to the column with a bracket that i that accepts the column and spreads the weight of the tabletop. (too bad i didn’t that a picture of the underside)
Finished with wood conditioner, followed by a slightly tinged dewaxed shellac, and then a nice top coat of Poly.
Altoghether about 30 hrs. Lots of fun and not overwhelming.
