Slab bench with drawer
This is designed to be a piano bench for my brother in law. The dimensions are 19″ tall by 40″ long by 16″ deep. The cherry slab and drawer are from one piece of scrap found at the local lumberyard and the legs are cherry scrap from my shop. Inlaid devetail keys are made from walnut scrap. The legs are attached with through wedged tenons. The drawer front is quartersawn and has incredible swirling ray flakes. The slab has incredible dark red cherry color, almost the darkest and richest I’ve seen. The pictures were taken before the bench was exposed to hardly any sunlight, so I imagine it will be very rich and dark in a year or two.
The slab has lots of character, with knots, small areas of crotch figure, worm holes and quartersawn figure. I decided to add to the rustic effect by using an asymmetric layout for the drawer and the legs — the drawer is offcenter while two of the legs are straight and the other two are angled. The turned legs add an element of refinement to the otherwise rustic piece.
The finish is oil/varnish mix.
