Shibumi Table
Shibumi Table (“shibumi” is Japanese for “elegant simplicity”) is also known as a “compound-mitred trestle table”. I designed it to display my on-going interest in form defined by structure, materiality, and process. The understructure of ebonized mahogany creates a visual tension or visual anomaly. This contrast in perception by is accomplished by using elements and joinery that represents the opposite of what is visually perceived. The table is made of California Black Walnut with marble wedges to secure the tusk tenons of the trestle bar.

An absolutely beautiful piece of furniture, my congratulations. I would love to see more photos showing the top in all its glory and some showing the construction detail.
You certainly accomplished your goals for this piece, Robert. This is an excellent design with outstanding workmanship. I love the contrast between the natural wood top and the ebonized support. And marble wedges, too! Great mix of media.
Beautiful. I don't know if that qualifies as simple, but you just nailed the tension thing. It looks like a table about to pounce. Sort of alive. More photos please.
You should post more photos! Thanks, Gina
