Two Truly Big Tables
My friend and fellow furniture maker, Steve Holman, of Holman Sutdios, and I are working on a commission for two large conference tables, one 26′ by 9′ and one 20′ x 8′ … It’s Steve’s client and we’re sort of splitting the work. He’s making the bases for the tables, doing all the veneer work and finishing. and doing all the client communications and negotiations … We’re responsible for the cnc work that is involved in fabricating the 7 piece and 5 piece disassembleable tops of the tables, the templatees for their granite pieces, and the fitted center substrates. The edge of the tables are profiled solid cherry, than there is 24″ band of 1.125″ thick granite cantilevered in space out over the base, and in the center, veneered mdf panels. There was a ton of CNC work … (80′ radius curves anyone?), quite a lot of problem solving and engineering, (delivery to New Jersey, for instance), and a lot of collaborative thought that went into the whole project. Steve and I are neighbors and we have worked on other projects in the past, but nothing like this one … It’s been an extremely interesting project so far and not one that either one of us would have maybe tackled on our own … More info and larger pictures in several posts on my dorset custom furniture blog … This one has links to all of them …
