Bedroom fireplace & closet built-ins
A work in progress. I’ve finished the bedroom mantel and bookcases and two of the closet units. (My wife’s shoe rack is not pictured.) I’m still working on the built-in chest and I have a linen closet to go.

Absolutely gorgeous work! This is quality the rest of us should aspire to. I'm building new kitchen cabinets and hopefully they'll be of this quality.
Can I ask what kind of stain and finish you used?
Thanks! I also will be making kitchen cabinets as well as some other built-ins. We are renovating an older home which had been converted to four apartments in 1950.
There is no stain. The finish is shellac. I mixed my own; I used 3 parts garnet to 1 part ruby, dewaxed flakes in a 1-1/2 lb cut applied with a natural bristle brush. I didn't keep an exact count, but there are at least seven coats. I did this to try to match the existing wood work in the house. Also, I love the look of a shellac finish! Of course for a kitchen, shellac isn't the finish of choice.
I want one. The built-in mantle in my place looked good until I saw yours. Now it has to go. You've ruined me. Thanks.
Beautiful work. It's inspiring. I just hope my wife doesn't see it. She thinks my work looks good.
Congratulations!
Have you built the shoe rack? If so, could we have a look? It looks like shoe accommodation is what I will have to do first. Thanks
