“Chou” Chair
This chair was my graduation project from the Fine Furniture Program offered at Camosun College in beautiful Victoria, BC. I named the chair “chou” a kanji meaning for butterfly, which fittingly represents my use of the butterfly to join and hold the split back of the chair together. It was a true test of my abilities within the 6 weeks alotted for this project. This project also had shipping restrictions such as the size and weight. If the piece did not fit in the container size it had to be broken down into smaller shippable pieces. My chair of course did not fit, so I had to use knock-down hardware such as bed bolts and draw bolts so the piece could easily break down into 5 smaller pieces for shipping. Together with these restrictions, the tapered bent lamination, trying to cut the shape of the butterfly on inside and outside curves…this surely was a blood sweat and tears project! This chair is made out of bitter cherry, shop made alder veneers with cherry accents.
