Pete’s Scandinavian Style Bench
This bench was built under the tutelidge of Rand Richards at the Red Rocks School of Fine Woodworking in Lakewood, Colorado. Cost for materials and tuition approximately $1000. Still one of my all time favorite projects. The stability of this bench makes hand tooling a dream.

Great looking bench, are there any plans for this out there?
No plans availale for this bench. All benches built at Red Rocks are custom builds. Students research bench styles and study elements of benches and ergonomics in the shop to determine best height, style, and size for their own bench. My shop drawings are long gone at this point. There is a fair amount of hidden engeneering that is non-intuitive so do your homework! If you're in the Denver area, take this class. I can't recommend it enough.
This bench combines a classic design with terrific materials and excellent craftwork. The time and expense of building it will be easily offset by skills and insights gained while it was built. Further, it will pay rich dividends every time you use it, or even when you pass by and simply run your hand over it. A woodworker's dream, it is both beautiful and functional. Thanks for posting these photos!
Fantastic look bench--I'm in the early stages of designing my next (first real) bench and am considering a Scandinavian style bench with should vise as well. However, this style seems to be falling from fashion... I'm wondering why you chose this style and how much extra effort the shoulder vise was, and whether you think construction of the shoulder vise was worth it?
I really like the through tenons for knock down and the laminated construction looks good and presumably simplified the process!
Cheers,

Hi Pete
Just spotted this post! lovely bench I am building something along the same lines but with 100 year old wharf timber I picked up.
I was wondering how wide/high those through mortises are in the legs for the long strectches? they look about 40-50mm (sorry we work in mm down under).
I would be interested to know!
cheers
