Michael Pekovich’s Shop (FWW art director)
Michael Pekovich set out to turn a dark, damp, cold garage into a warm, four-season workspace. With its drafty doors and concrete floor, Pekovich’s uninsulated shop was limited to warm-weather woodworking. Even in the summer, the low ceiling, dark walls, and minimal lighting made the space feel cramped and dreary. But by adding insulation, improving the lighting, and replacing the garage doors with shopmade carriage doors, the space is transformed into a comfortable, year-round workspace.

Great Job! I'm just in planning stages for mine.
My dream shop, 35 years in the dreaming, is in the final stage of construction. It is based on a Utility buidling/carport from TNT Carports. It has two roll-up garage doors which will keep the cars in, but do nothing for bugs or the cold. I was thinking of carriage doors and this article is just what the doctor ordered! I am going to build and install these on my two garage doors and then remove the roll-ups!
Anyone want to buy a couple of roll-up doors with hardware? Hardly used!
The weather associated with the blizzard has convinced me that those carriage doors WILL BE BUILT this week and installed this weekend!
My poor wood stove just couldn't keep up with the blast through the top of the roll-up doors!
But, my building, electtical and fire inspections passed with flying colors and I am starting to populate my shop. My clamps are stored on the wall behind the stove.
Many thanks to Michael Pekovich for the inspiration for the carriage doors!
Thanks for the article and pictures. I am using your design in my two-car garage that I'm converting into a shop. I'm copying your doors exactly.
The shop you have looks great! Thanks for sharing your photo. Would like to view the interior.
Sweet!!! It must be nice to have such a woodworking palace. Looking back on my last three comments it's becomes painfully obvious that I am seriously jealous of people who have shops like this.
Anybody know the dimensions for the windows? I'm trying to get the same proportions. Thanks.
Hi Michael,
How some dimensions of your garage for us carpenters who are interested in seeing how our existing garage might compare before remodeling. Width across the front where the doors are, depth front to back etc.
Thanks, very nice work!
