I built this unit to store our collection of DVDs and CDs which had gotten out of hand. Its dimensions were determined by the size of a CD/DVD case and the width of our current TV.

The case is cherry with ebony and ebonized walnut accents.  The drawers, which are full extension, are soft maple assembled with machine cut dovetails.  Case construction is standard mortise and tenon.  The finish is 1 coat of Minwax Antique Oil, 2 or more coats of Minwax wipe on gloss poly, scuffed and then waxed.  The drawers are shellacked with Zinzer seal coat which is blond dewaxed shellac. 

The doors are held closed by rare earth magnets, with the magnets in the top of the center door rails and the underside of the front top stretcher.  This is based on a readers tip published in FWW a few issues ago.  This provides enough energy to hold the door closed without a “hard” latch since the magnets never actually touch each other. Very little initial energy is required to break the bond and open the door.  As an added bonus, since the case is not vented, the trapped volume of air within the case provides a soft close feature.  Just push the door closed  and the trapped air will stop it from slamming,  then the magnets smoothly pull the door closed the remaining inch.
