“John Owen’s Adventure”
This piece was made to honor my 6 year old grandson who has muscular distrophy. His parents are putting him on this jurney as he gets progressivly weaker and weaker. It’s a fun journey doing all the things he can experience before the inevitable (baring a cure which is close). So I thought I would build him a make rocketship. As you can see by my bio, I am a wood artist. I have also made a lot of furniture. I like to do thins that noone else doea. I also like to make spheres. Lately as I have delved into the world of the abstract I have incorporated them in a lot of them. They represent a person in this case John Owen. The 15″sphere was turned in halves and glued together . Why? Because my lathe limited me from turning it whole. The 3 legs and the base were also turned , but using a unique machine I have constructed using a Cincinnatti Universal Indexing Head and an arm from a table saw feeder with a router attatched to the end pictured above. I also used this device to machine out the concave area in the legs. This device is also used to machine fluting and can machine other very interesting things I will post later. The legs were fashioned with the bandsaw and hand planes. The finish on the sphere is Danish Oil and I used enamels for the colored areas. The holes on the legs and top were done with a small conical dremel bit. It was a labor of love…Enjoy….Ray P.S. The website for “John Owens Adventure” a non profit fund raiser is joa.org

John, my prayers go out to your grandson. Its good to hear you are enjoying some time together with him.
Beautiful piece. Nice addition with the texture in the top surface. I'm intrigued with your 'Cincinnatti Machine' you built. Will you possibly be doing an article on that?
I would love to. I guess I have to be asked first....Thanks for the comment....Ray
