Hope Chest
I made this for my daughters 13th birthday. I used Walnut, and the lid is out of sometype of rosewood which I can't remember know. It is VERY dense and heavy. Really nice stuff. I made a mallet handle out of it also and I love it.

sorry this is sideways but it does show the wonderful look of the top.

I put bowties or butterflies in the corners of the frame. That was a trick and took me quite a while to figure out how to do it right.

I'm embarrased to admit it but the panels are just the thin stuff you buy at Lowes for $12 for a 4 x 8 sheet that is 1/4 thick. I bought quite a few panels in order to get the right flow of the grain, but it really turned out nice.

To finish it all I just sanded well and used a rubbing varnish mixture I got from a magizine. It worked well and really looked nice. Not to bad for my first hope chest.

I really like the contrasting colors and wood grains.
I made one similar to this that inside had cedar closet liner on the bottom and a 5" tall, dovetailed drawer box on cleats so it could slide back and forth.
Works great for smaller items that are too big for her new jewelry box.(your next project?) ha.
Please let your daughter know I think she's pretty lucky to have such a cool dad.

Nice job...great contrast and a nice finish. You do realize that every daughter, grand daughter, friend of daughter are now in line for one of your chest's. Happened to me, could happen to you. Great looking chest, I'll bet your daughter loves it.
