Bird’s Eye Maple Bathroom Cabinet
The starting point for the design of this commission was the man-made marble top, which has rounded front corners. The customer wished to have a cabinet that would echo this feature. After a few design iterations we settled for the design you see here. The idea to make an arch in the side panels to form the back legs came from pieces built by Michael Fortune. In order to make the rounded front legs stand out a little more I “framed” them with a couple mahogany bead mouldings. The colour contrast also gives a needed break from the grain/colour uniformity of the maple.
Solid maple construction throughout except for the back, which is a 1/4” plywood. The legs have a 3” radius. Frame and panel door and drawer front. Dovetailed drawers riding on center-mount ball-bearing slides. The top is attached to the carcass using silicone adhesive. 23” wide x 15” deep x 32” high. Finished with a couple coats of de-waxed shellac to help pop the figure of the wood followed by two coats of waterborne lacquer.
