Inspiration 1.0 – Walnut and Curly Walnut custom rocking chair
This sculpted custom rocking chair is built from 2’’ Canadian Black Walnut and special piece of Curly Walnut. This is a Medium version ( 5’ 5’’ – 5’ 10’’ ). We’ve used a rare and beautiful piece of Curly Walnut as the highlight on the front and back of the rocking chairs flexible back braces.
Features:
– Beautiful curly Canadian Black Walnut form fitting flexible back braces
– coopered headrest
– exposed Maloof joinery
– hand carved seat, arms, and joints
– Truly a unique and beautiful custom rocking chair that is about as comfortable as they come
Well another chair all finished, this one was a joy to work on the walnut was beautiful, cut and sanded like butter. We used ash as the 2 middle lamination’s sandwiched between grain matched curly walnut we found while digging through our Walnut supply.
The entire chair is sanded up to 500 grit using an abralon pad then burnished with a sheep wool pad before our 3 part oil-resin ( blo , tung , poly ) finish is applied. This chair really sucked up the finish we put just over 500mL of finish and only used 6 blue shop towels to wipe it down and they were not really soaked in finish. In these pictures there is 2 coats of finish with a light rub down with 0000 steel wool in between coats.
This is one really sits nice, I don’t want to get up once I sit down I’m glad we keep the chairs for a few weeks before they have to go (-: Although I think I say that with every new chair we build seems like there’s some sort of pattern here. Can’t wait to build another we’ll keep you posted.
We have some posts on this rocking chair and many others during the build process on our custom wooden rocking chair design and build blog
We have more detailed pictures of this chair on our rocking chair gallery page also on our site.
Thanks for having a look, I hope we inspire all you jocks who are on the fence about building on of these to give it a go! I’m sure any templates or plans you decide on will produce a great experience and chair, but in my case I do recommend the templates and plans from Hal Taylor.
