Shakashima Media Cabinet

I named this my Shakashima Media Cabinet. I drew inspiration for the design from the Shakers and Japanese furniture styles. The cabinet is made of Cherry and Curly Maple with Maple as a secondary wood. The Maple panels are book matched. The top rails of the cabinet have a cove to match the top of the flaired legs. Construction is mortise and tenon joinery and tongue and groove. All surfaces are hand planed and scraped with a card scraper.
Finished with 2 coats of shellac, and 3 coats of oil/urethane.

Very nice design and execution. As to your finish, can you tell me the schedule? Was it shellac first and then the oil/urethane or otherwise. Also, what oil/urethane did you use? It looks very "in-the-wood" which is a nice change from the urethane I usually see.
Thanks! The schedule was two coats of rubbed on shellac - light sand after each coat. Three coats of oil/urethane are then applied by hand, with a light sand between all coats. The last coat is lightly buffed with steel wool.
Looks really nice I too am influenced by the shaker/japanese styles... The only bit of feedback that I would give you is that you may have wanted to reduce the width of the rails and styles of the doors to offset bring an added visual dimension and show off that book matched curly maple!! Great looking piece!
MoFrak - That's an interesting suggestion. I hadn't considered that. The luxury we have as designers and builders is that we can tweak and change things each time we build them. Thanks for the feedback!
