Rietveld meets Nakashima chair
Made out of one board of ambrosia maple, this chair was inspired by Garrit Rietveld and George Nakashima. The zig zag design originated in the 1930’s, but still looks fresh today. The butterflies are inspired by George Nakashima, and actually help hold a natural split in place. I hand cut the dovetails at the base of the back where it meets the seat at an 8 degree angle. The splines and butterflies are made of walnut. I used a home made jig to cut the dovetail slots on the leading edges, then inserted walnut splines, that were cut on a table saw. Hand planed and scrapped the surface was only sanded between coats of General Finishs’ “Arm R Seal” simi gloss.

BRAVO - That's design AND woodworking!! Excellent!!
Where did you get the ambrosia maple. I am currently working on a piece, but I got it from a friend's backyard - not a solid source.
