a walnut slab bed
we finished a neat bed friday. the clients sent us an inspiration photo and we made a couple of photoshpped mockups for them to consider. we had a couple of bookmatched american walnut slabs on hand that fit the bill and off we went .. the slabs are connected on the back side with 1×2 rectangular steel tubing and will be hung on the wall with a pair of french cleats. the drawer boxes are bolted through the headboard with 3, 5/16ths bolts per box and are surprisingly rigid … the holes in the platform are for ventilation as the mattress will rest directly on the ply frame and the bed will be in a town in coastal florida … the finish is brushed on minwax poly … a fun project and i could see doing more of these in the future. in fact, i have a 50” x 9’ slab of claro walnut or a pair of bookmatched 20” walnut boards just waiting for the right client. there are more photos and process descriptions on my dorset custom furniture blog.
i have also posted a link to a mitered frame glue up jig that we made recently. there is more on that in the ‘jigs’ gallery, we feel this jig once and for all makes that process relaxingly doable …
lastly, there’s a link to a post on a big ash table in the last three photos …
enjoy …
