Kaligrafia – a hall table
Its a hall table that I’d been struggling to draw for a few weeks. I had the germ of an idea in my head but I couldn’t get it nailed down on paper, but eventually it just fell out of me in 5 mins flat, I’m not kidding. The inlay in the top of the legs was hard work as wenge is so dark and the end grain so hard it pushed me. Rubbing chalk into the knife line I’d drawn helped a lot though. The top frame is wenge constructional veneer 1/16″ thick built up to 3/8″ and laminated over a mold and placed in a vacuum bag press. The spoke shaving I had to do on the legs produced blisters which I hadn’t had in 20 years and the splinters hurt like heck. But depite the dificulty of conception and pain of the delivery this little baby was worth it in the end. Shellac finished.

Very nice Nicholas.
I know what you mean about getting the idea on paper. I'm currently struggling with a table design as I write.
I go thru this process every time. It happens on its own schedule. And that's the way it should be. :)
Thanks Greg! As you've probably found, the more you struggle with the design and the longer it takes the more rewarding the finished piece is. I put the drawings away for a few days to revisit afresh later with new eyes. Surprising the benefit that has, then I turn it upside down too, there's another trick I found out by accident.
i find that after noodling on it for way too long, lots of sketchs..i just get started and my hands tell what to do. beautiful piece.
