This was a very fun Project. Both pictures were cut on a scroll saw at the same time. Using a method named after Andre Charles Boulle. Boulle mixed wood and metals cut at the same time. This would allow for the cabinet maker to mix up the different woods and metals. This way one could create two or three different finished pieces of marquetry. My two cartoon panels are made out of 9 different pieces of veneer 8 1/2″ wide x 12″ long.

Not impressed, surely we could be inspired to do this if there was an attractive picture or if cartoon like something with a little class!
Marquetry is a fun attactivity and should be encouraged.
Dennis there are many that appreciate your work and enjoy following each project you post. There is NOTHING wrong with having a little fun with Marquetry, and your work inspires alot of woodworkers. Keep it up and I hope you do another cartoon soon...
Hi Ihsat, Thank you for your opinion, The customer wanted two picture frames with cartoon marquetry. They were very happy with the outcome. I was wondering if I should have posted these here on Fine Woodworking, the best in woodworking which I have the highest of respect for. I will ask the editor if I should remove this project. The next time I do something fun like this, I will get permission first.
Dennis: Not everyone has to like everything, I would love to see other work that you have done. Somehow, I seem to have missed some of your other articles. Sounds like your work is very much appreciated.
Why be serious, this life is too serious as it is. When I first saw this, I laughed and thought that is cool. So often we take this craft of ours too seriously. Whats wrong with a little humor. I still find the design a challenge, what with the flowing hair and the multiple colors needed for an image to be easily interprated. Whats more YOU GOT PAID TO DO IT.
I am confused by Ihsat's comments. There are examples of furniture designs with questionable taste thruout history, but you cannot deny the skill in which it took to create. Personal taste is just that, personal...

Dennis, many of us know your work from other forums. It's always top notch and first class and everything you do is worthy of Fine Woodworking. I'm glad to see this project here. It shows the versatility of what is possible with marquetry, having a little fun while still executing it with precision and skill. No need to ever ask permission to post your projects! Dennis, what a Great & Fun project this must have been for you. You Have done so many awesome carvings with a wide range of talent, on many types of Beautiful furniture.
