Dreaming under the Deck
A couple of years ago, I dug out the area beneath my living room and created a workshop. It is great for turning and scroll saw work, but for furniture it is pretty tight. With the exception of my scroll saw and the assembly table, everything is on wheels. So every time I need to do any table saw work or surfacing, I wheel everything outside and set up shop—literally. I store my table saw in the shed and wheel it over under my deck. So this plan is my plan when I expand my shop. The inset room is my existing shop. I would rip off my mahogany deck and add another garage stall to the right of the existing shop. I would then pour a concrete deck and enclose it with lots of glass and a garage door facing the woods just outside my shop. This configuration allows me to have many projects going at different stages all at once. I spend more time planning what needs to be done and wheeling tools around than I do actually woodworking. The plan is to start construction on the project once my kids retire from hockey. So in the near and probably distance future I will be wheeling tools around, standing on my deck pondering the possibilities or driving to distant hockey rinks. So this is truly a dream shop.
