Coker Live Edge Coffee Table
COKER LIVE EDGE COFFEE TABLE
Dimensions: 48″L x 24″W x 15″H.
Finish: Hand-rubbed oil & wax — 5 coats of Danish oil wet sanded up to 1200-grit, followed by 2 coats of paste wax — buffed to a satin sheen.
This is my 3nd attempt at creating a modern slab coffee table. Wanting to create a piece that combined the American Craft design style with the look of Mid Century Modern, my two influences for this piece were the live-edge works by George Nakashima for the top, and George Nelson’s 1948 “Platform Bench” for the base.
Mortise + tenon joinery was used in constructing the table — no screws, bolts, or other hardware. Work was also completed using only traditional hand tools.
Thank you for your interest and for taking a closer look at my work. I’m constantly looking to improve as a woodworker, and would certainly welcome any comments or feedback you might have for me – on this piece or any one of my other gallery submissions here on FWW.

Beautiful presentation of a great slab of cherry. How did your first two attempts at a slab table turn out?
@shakersteve - Thanks for the compliment! The first two turned out well, but I've certainly improved with each piece (I believe), especially with the hand-cut inlays. The 1st was a simple Eastern Red Cedar slab w/ MCM steel hairpin legs - the 2nd, another Cherry slab set on a Nakashima-style base w/ Maple inlay (it's also in the FW "readers gallery"). This is a beautiful table. Any chance of seeing the underside of it? Do you have any other pieces posted? Thanks, Don.
