I made this bed for my adult son. It may not be pretty but it’s rock solid and is made to be broken down, transported and reassembled quickly and easily using only a socket wrench. Except for the oak headboard supports all the wood is pine. The platform panels are half inch MDF.

Fully assembled platform bed. When the mattress is added its top is even with the lower edge of the headboard. The finishes used on the frame and headboard are wipe on polyurethane and spray paint.

The crossbar ends fit snugly into sockets on the bed rails.
This view shows the back of the headboard and the painted oak brackets and posts that attach it to the bed frame. The raised satin black panel in the headboard (photos 1 and 2) is made from a single pine plank with rounded edges.
I like the design, clean and simple but as you say rock solid. Could you add bottom panels to create a storage area? The sides seem deep enough. I have a couple of grandsons that could use something like that.

I like the design, clean and simple but as you say rock solid. Could you add bottom panels to create a storage area? The sides seem deep enough. I have a couple of grandsons that could use something like that.
With some design modification I don't see why not. I think the legs would need to be lengthened a bit to raise the bed higher off the floor.

I think it's pretty enough and the knockdown capability makes it even prettier.
It's handsome, practical and solid. What's not pretty about that?
