Anika’s Cradle
After the cradle design and measurements were drawn up, I planned mahogany to 5/8”…the design pieces were laid out, cut, routed, carved, sanded and dry fit …I bleached the wood white to get the finish base color I needed… after I neutralized the bleach, the pieces were dried…I sanded the raised grain with 400 grit paper and assembled/glued the cradle… 3/16” mahogany paneling was used for the bottom…
I applied Minwax Golden Oak 210B stain on everything except the shield on the crest…to get the red I used thinned red enamel and left the white area as is…after a light 400 grit sanding I applied 3 coats of oil base spar varnish…
I used 24 ct. gold leaf and sizing for the lion and the 1901… after varnishing over the gold leaf, I thinned burnt umber oil paint, then coated each piece and wiped them down to get the desires antique effect…another coat of varnish and Anika’s Cradle was finished…
To hang the cradle, I tapered spliced 4soft nylon 3/8” ropes with attaching ceiling hardware and 2” brass rings…total cost under $50…man-hours 30… A One of a Kind…
