Elegant Chair designed by Matthew Teague.
H: 40 in. D: 17 In. W: 19 in. So far this is the first one of six chairs I started back 6 months ago. They are made of red oak and the joinery is floating tenon, same as the plan. All the surfaces are hand planed, spokeshaved or card scraped. The edges have been pillowed a’la Krenov style. The finish is Watco natural Danish oil. Although I kind of wish I had gone with something a bit more durable. Anyone know if you can go over Danish oil with a wipe on poly? I did not upholster the seat myself as I’m fortunate enought to have an uphosterer next to my shop.

Very nice!
I always enjoy seeing these designs tweaked to your tastes, and I love the three-piece back. To your question, you can put Waterlox or a similar varnish-based finish over Danish oil if you want a little more protection. That said, I use Danish Oil by itself on many of my chairs and have yet to encounter a problem. Beautiful work and attention to graining.

Really nice work! That will be a great looking room.
Thanks guys! Many days working on this chair, I had a big old smile on my face. Except the days I was fitting the back splats. Thanks for the kind words Matthew. The reason I was thinking about a wipe on poly, is that my 3 year old son is a painfully messy eater.
I've put too much work into the chair to end up with a life time of food stains.
How ironic! I've been trying to get up the courage to tackle the Matthew Teague chair for about 2 years now. I've watched the videos so much I feel like Matt and I are old friends. I finally started on it about a month and a half ago. Last night I finally cut the back splat to length. Once I shape and mortise it all I'll need to do is glue it up and upholster the seat.
I'm making a prototype 1st out of yellow pine. Then I plan to buy enough Ash to make 5 chairs.
After seeing your chair I don't know that I'll post pictures of my "pine" chair. Your's looks great.
Matthew Teague, thanks for the project videos, I've learned a lot from you.

To Mathew. I tried to buy you chair plan from the Taunton store but it is not in stock. Any idea if they will restock this plan?
