Trish’s Pie Safe/Entertainment Center
Our TV stand in the sun room showed the messy backside facing the dining room and my lady had always wanted a pie safe…a couple of months back, Woodworker’s Journal had plans for a country style pie safe…I used the photograph to design a false front pie safe…making it not as deep and the backside became my entertainment center…
I used ¾” plywood for the body, 3/8” plywood for the false drawers and door fronts, wood dowels for the visible part of the hinges, 2 large Heineken cans for the tin and a piece of 2 x 12 planned for the top (all shop scrap)…I altered the tin pattern using the plans from Woodworker’s Journal, made a 2nd copy and spray glued them on the tin…after the holes were punched (a couple of thousand by my lady), I used acetone to remove the glued paper…
We painted the blue using water base paint , then a couple of coats of spray varnish…after assembly of the painted body and before I installed the tin, I used thin black oil paint to wash the project, then wiped it down to get the desires antique effect…after 3 or 4 days drying time, one more coat of gloss spray varnish…then install the tin, top and knobs…
building time=10 hours…level of difficulty=easy and Trish did most of the work…tin punching time=5 hours…cost=just the wooden knobs at Home Depot…now, half of Trish’s friends want one…
