Kitchen Table and Chairs
Chair design and table elements influenced by one of Christian Becksvoort’s chair. Tabletop is clad with 3/16″ veneers resawn from 8/4 maple and glued to 1″ MDF substrate. Edging is 3/4″ x 1 1/2″ solid maple and curved apron supports are laminated and bent over a form. Chairs are solid maple with upholstered seat insert; curved parts cut from solid boards.

Very nice!!!!
Love the "clean" design.
Some questions:
The amber color looks great, what finish did you use?
Was the upholstery leather, or cloth and thickness of foam used?
Just amazing the top os the table!
How did you make that mosaic?
Ron,
I used a substrate of 1/2" MDF in two parts. The bottom part is a full sheet, cut to the top overall length and width, and the part onto which I laminated the maple slats was cut into quarters. I laminated 3/16" thick resawn maple slats, then laid them up on each quarter panel diagonally at 45 degrees, routed them flush to each edge with a guided bit, and glued them into the pattern to see on the full sheet. The edge is solid maple. -- Bob
Willie,
The amber color came from MinWax Colonial Maple gel stain, followed by six coats of urethane varnish which I wet-sanded smooth between each coat. Then a coat of paste wax after I set it up in the kitchen.
The chairs are upholstered in a heavy fabric that matches the colors of our great room's valences, provided by the decorator. The method I followed is from an article in Fine Woodworking on upholstering dining chiars. There is a 1/4" vented support over which there is foam in two parts, more dense in the middle and less around the edge, then covered in linen, then upholstered. I hope this helps. -- Bob
Ron,
The substrate is two layers of 3/4" MDF, the top of which is cut in quarters. The top mosaic is created with 3/16" resawn maple glued to each quarter panel at an angle, trimmed, then glued to the bottom solid piece of MDF. Then I laid down a "frame" of 3/16" maple and trimmed to square. The edge is solid maple 1 1'2" x 2 1/2".
