For Christmas I had a scrub plane blade on my list from Ron Hock.  Santa gave me the 1 1/2″ wide x 4 1/2″ long, radiused blade that Ron sells on his website.  I used parts of his plans and also referred back to James Krenov’s book to make this example.  The construction of it is very similar to the classic Krenov design with a few, obvious changes.  When I started to research scrub planes I found some information that using the Krenov style didn’t give enough grip, I also found a picture of one that someone else made that inspired this design.

The main part is Walnut and the sides are Canarywood.  The sole is a piece of Purpleheart, the wedge Zebrawood, and I chose some Ebony dowels that I had made for another project.  This was an enjoyable project to make and my first attempt at making a plane.  Shaping the handle and front knob was something new to me.  This was accomplished with spokeshaves, rasps, files, and sandpaper.  The handle (tote) was sized from a backsaw I had and the front is pretty much customized to how I intend to hold the plane.  The way it is gives me the choice of wrapping 3 fingers around the front with my thumb and index finger around the knob or else all 4 fingers can be wrapped around the front of the plane.  Over-all length of this tool is just under 11″.
