Choba Dansu (Merchant Tansu Chest)
A merchant chest (Choba Dansu) type of tansu. Designed from tansu layout proportions. 34″x34″x13″
Canarywood drawer fronts and doors bookmatched and cut from a single 8′ 8/4 plank. Doors use a hidden breadboard to keep them stable. Recessed kickboard is also a hidden drawer. Hardware from a combination of sources including Hida Tool and antique hardware on eBay.
The first tansu I’ve attempted, the hardware ended up being the biggest obstacle. Finding a matching set of hinges, bracket and pulls outside of Japan was a real challenge. I was able to piece together a set that ‘went’ rather than perfectly matched hrough a combination of different sources.
It seemed like hardware was always the main emphasis for tansu and I thought using canarywood, definitely not a tradtional material, would bring the woodwork back to the main emphasis.

Nice job! I lived in Japan for awhile and my experience was that the hardware seemed to always over power the cabinet.
