Krenov Inspired/Gift for Parents
Inspired by the works of James Krenov I decided to try my first cabinet on a stand following Jim Budlong’s article in FWW. After getting to use an actual Krenov plane at Inside Passage School I got motivated to make my own and I hand planed every surface with a wooden smoother. I tried my best to pay attention to proper grain graphics and book matched the sides, top, bottom and back panel.
I built the stand out of Mahogany and the cabinet from one plank of reclaimed vertical grain Douglas fir from an abandon grain silo. The frame and panel back was made from Spanish Cedar and Mahogany. The cedar gives the cabinet a wonderful scent when the doors are opened. The case is dowelled and I used knife hinges for the doors. I finished it with Shellac and wax. The cabinet hovers over the stand by about 3/32″ which has the desired effect I was after.
Still lots to learn but it was such enjoyable work. I am looking forward to another cabinet made from white oak based on my own design.
Oh, and my Parent’s loved it !
