Secretary Desk
When I was young, my aunt had a slant front secretary desk with the supports which automatically slid out when the front was opened. I thought it was about the greatest trick I had ever seen. I finally produced my own desk, and I still think the hardware which deploys the supports is a really great idea. I used a set of plans from Rockler as my starting point, but rather than plywood and veneer, I used solid cherry with a mahogany front. The stringing is maple. The interior dividers, shelves and drawers are my own design. The brass hardware is from Horton Brasses.
This is the first time I have worked with cherry, and it won’t be the last. The piece is finished with hand-rubbed General Finishes Oil and Urethane.

Looking good. Now this is my idea of fine woodworking!!!!! Great job.
You've built an heirloom to be cherished for years to come.
Fantastic job!! One of these has always been on my to do list. Now I want to start on it faster.
Did you build it so the supports come out automatically? If so where did you get the hardware and plans to do it?
Hey, thanks for the comments - much appreciated. It is built so the supports come out automatically. I found the hardware at Rockler.com. It consists of the arms that slide the supports and a pair of hinges that work well with the arms. Thanks, folks.
PhoneBill, I love your desk. I know nothing about furniture or woodworking. Any idea how I would go about finding someone in my area to help me build a similar one?
Thanks a lot!!
