‘take an object; do something to it; do something else to it’
the title quote above is by jasper johns, and it has been sort of a loose guiding mantra in my design work over the last 30/40 years what i take from it is that your ideas don’t have to be completely radical, or new, or far out, or whatever, but that they should spring logically from your work and others’ work in the past, building incrementally over time as thoughts are added. in jasper’s case, one of his most famous images is of the american flag … not exactly a radical new image, until he got through with it. that said, this post is really a catalog of just a few of the things you can do starting with a basic slab of wood, in this case, claro wlanut, definitely, one of the more interesting ones avaiilable.
also, earlier in the year, i wrote on my blog, a post of this exact title, describing our work in what we describe as our ‘studio style’ based inadvertantly and loosely on our accidental discovery of the beidermeier style through a client describing furniture she had lived with during a stay in germany. we have been fooling with its basic tenants: natural or stained main wood, combined with painted legs, apron borders and hardware since 1987 and we never seem to tire of the possibilities.
moral here is a subtle change can make a radical difference; sometimes incremental is better than radical and new. take an object; do something to it. carry on …

Exquisite work my friend. The miniature is an ingenious idea.
