Fibonacci 18 Drawer Chest w/ two “push-button” drawers
This is a chest of drawers I designed and built for my daughter. The cherry is from a tree that fell on our house – almost free lumber. The design is influenced by the Fibonacci sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34….). The overall dimensions are 38.5″ wide x 18″ deep x 60″ tall. The small 1″ “drawers” are actually buttons – used to open the 2″ and 3″ drawers. The sides are 3/4″ cherry panels set in 5/4 frames, the back is 3/4″ shiplap and bevel cherry boards (free lumber). I tried to make the profile of the drawer dividers heavy where they define the boundaries of the Fibonacci sequence, and ‘light’ / thinner where they are within the boundary. I use 3/16″ thick UHMW for drawer side guides, and on the drawer bottoms as the sliding contact with the wood rails – should last a couple life times. I use 4 coats of polyurethane semi-gloss, and wet sanded the last coat with 2000 grit paper.

Barkboy - The deal I have made with my four children is that they can place thier order for a special piece of furniture - after they graduate from college. I'm behind schedule. Daughter number two has requested a knock-down armoire, daughter number three has requested an expandable dining room table, and number one son...(still in college) has requested a boat. I may trick him into one of those vertical canoe bookshelf units...
