Wooden Boat – Sailing tender
I built this Iaian Oughtred designed Puffin rowing and sailing tender and entered it in the Keels and Wheels antique car and boat show in Seabrook, Texas. The boat recived a Corinthian Award for new boat construction. She took about 280 hours to build, plus another 130 hours to finish – 10 coats of spar varnish plus five coats of paint on the outside. The boat is glued plywood lapstrake construction made of Okoume plywood with African Mahogany transom, rudder, floors and thwarts. Light wood accents are American Alder. The stem and keel are White Oak. Spars are Sitka Spruce. The sail was made by Banks Sails, Kemah, Texas. Oughtred’s plans were exceptionally good and allowed me to modify the transom to my own design. I replaced knees, called for in the plan, with Alder half-frames to support the thwarts for a cleaner look.
