Workbench
I made this a few years ago as I began the (seemingly endless) transition to being a self-employed woodworker. I followed Lon Schleining’s Essential Workbench pretty closely.
The top and base are made of local ash, the apron is birch, the cabinet is cherry and maple, and then there are various accent woods.
Having a proper workbench really helped take my work to another level, I feel. I can focus more on working the wood and less on figuring out how to hold it in place. I also love the cabinet, and having access to my most used tools without going anywhere. A highly recommended design, for anyone thinking of undertaking such a worthy pursuit.
P.S. I saw this mentioned elsewhere, and I agree: I think it makes more sense having some kind of quick-release tail vise, where you’re dealing with widely varying lengths, and a screw-action vise up front where you’re usually dealing with consistent thicknesses. Mine is the other way.

That is an awesome workbench.
Thank you for sharing this piece of art. You are a Master and an inspiration to all of us. Keep up the good work.
Stuning!!!! More like a piece of fine furniture than a workbench. I'd almost be afraid to use it for fear of damaging it. Great job.
Beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful! Where did you get the plans? I wood like to try building it.
Were you looking to give it away? I wood be happy to help you with that.
It is good to see the work of a master craftsman.
Thank you all so much for the comments! Of course, the bench has acquired a few battle scars since those photos were taken…
davidcarve: The plans are from this article: https://www.finewoodworking.com/PlansAndProjects/PlansAndProjectsPDF.aspx?id=2882
It’s pretty much just like that one, but with a few joinery changes (I think he uses bolts to hold the stretcher together, and I used wedged through tenons), and some different woods and details. The same author also did an article for FWW about a cabinet to go under the bench, and I also used that same basic idea.
Thanks again -Nathaniel
Love the through tenons... would make a great Bar.. so I'll drink to that...Excellent work....anyone who entered your shop looking for someone to do a project for them, would be sold immediately...
What finish is on it? Are you happy with it!
That is a great Work Bench !! ,about how much time to build that?
