Ash, Aluminum and Acrylic Stair Parts
The hand rail, ballaster caps and base plates are all solid ash and glued and assembled with a 3/8″ threaded rod internal nut and bolt system. The vertical ballasters are 1″ by 1″ solid aluminum square stock wrapped with an ash covering. The round hand rail is glued with two layers of solid ash to yeild a 2 1/2″ round diameter dowel which were rounded over with a hand held router by gradually lowering a 1 1/4″ rd over bit on all four corner runs. The tops of the vertical aluminum ballasters have been hand grinded to fit the radius of the curved and straight sections of the hand rail and bolted down from the top of the hand rail using a 1 1/2″ ash dowel plug to cover the bolt head. The clear acrylic sheets were cut, sanded and polished to my specs and suspended in between the ash that wrapped the aluminum ballasters. The day after I took these photograghs the owner of the store decided to paint all the ash wood in a latex grey paint. I nearly had a stroke when arriving to take final pictures with a tripod and lights. At least I have these few photograghs to show the project in the natural color of the ash.
