Mickey’s Wall Unit # 6
The center channel speaker cover was constructed using 3 separate layers of 1/8″ bending plywood. The thin layers of plywood were bent and glued using the black primed mdf side pieces as the form during the gluing process. Once all the segmented sections were finished they were then glued to each other to produce an entire shell to cover the speaker. Next, the multilayered shell covering, made of approximately 32 individual layers, was cladded with a wire screen mess crossing over the open front of the speaker compartment. Later a special decorative, accoustically clear fabric cloth was sewn in place following the vertical grain pattern that the pleated silky fabric lines produced. Finally the speaker was slipped into its upper compartment and the custom removable cover was locked in place. The left and right sides of the speaker cover were sculpted “wings” made from bending plywood and finished with an 18k real gold leaf, painted with a polished, polyester clear coat. The design of the so called “gold wings” was decided to be used because of the ceiling angle that we had to deal with which was right above the top of the center channel speaker. The original design called for frosted plexiglass wings that were to glow and pulsate with deep blue colors from a controlled light source.
