Shaker Teething Rattles
I made these turned Shaker teething rattles from cherry during the last couple of days. I have been turning rattles since reading an article on them in FWW back in the 70’s. Does anyone else make these?

I thought the rings were just for decoration. Never heard of them being teething rattles. So I guess cherry is a good wood for them and black walnut would not be. I am interested in trying to make some. Do you know of any other woods that would not be safe? Nice job!! WV John
I've seen a lot of teethers made out of maple on "etsy.com". Cool project and I know my kids liked the maple teethers I made for them. Randy
Thanks, guys. I know rosewood and cocobolo and olive can be irritating. I have never had any reaction problems with cherry but my favorite material is dogwood (Cornus florida). It is very dense and smooth grained, turns well and has not shown any irritation.
I, too, have made these rattles from an article in an old FWW 'Tecniques' book, usually out of walnut or cherry. Don't know how many kids I've poisoned.
