This rare (to me) heavily curly figured arbutus boards came from our local wood recovery program that have been ran by our local guild – WWW.VIWG.COM – from a few years back, at least 4~5 years as I recall.

As some of you may already know, drying/seasoning arbutus is very challenging as it is highly unstable during this process. Sure enough, most of these heavily figured boards were honeycombed. (checks in the middle of the board, either just below the surface or all the way through over the thickness of the board.) Anyway, I managed to use 3 boards to make this table.

Design is mine in collaboration with my clients, who were instantly fell in love with this wood as soon as I rubbed some paint thinner on it. In its trestle base, there are many compound angles, joined with tenons and loose tenons, as well as the wedged through tenons.

For the top, veneers (over Baltic birch plywood) were resawn, then sanded to 3/32″ thickness. All the edges are 3″ wide and 2-1/8″ thick. rest of the table is made out all all solid wood.

Top has been gradually sanded to 1000 grit and finished with many, many coats of hand rubbed varnish. (my mix)

Just as a nice finishing touch, thicker than the center edges were bevelled towards the cneter plywood base as seen in the last picture.
