Low Post Bed
A bed I made for my daughter. Cherry with oil and wax finish.
The posts were cutoffs from another project which needed a home. It is somewhat a truncated version of a pencil post bed. The cutoffs were not long enough for a full-length pencil posts so I came up with this “low post” design.
From my sketches I could not fully appreciate the relation of the head and foot board arc to the height of the post. After it was built I determined the heights needed refinement. I made another one for my older daughter and refined the posts are 2″ shorter so the arc of the head and foot board are visually (and physically) above the top of the posts. (I don’t have a picture of that one.) It has visual advantages over this one and I will likely need to chop 2″ off this one to balance it.
The posts are 11/4. The side rails are 7/4. The head and foot rails, and head and foot panels, are 5/4. It is a full size bed. The head and foot boards are mortise and tenon glued and pinned. The side rails are assembled with bed bolts.
