Birds in Flight Coffee Table
Woodworker: Michael C. Fortune
Birds in flight inspired this glass and East Indian rosewood design. Fortune used tapered laminations for the curved components of the table. After glue-up, he cut each bent piece twice down its length, then slipped the parts slightly out of alignment to give the legs a step effect. The joinery uses floating tenons at the intersections and a bridle joint to attach the two shapes. Fortune continues to build this design using different types of wood. Future leg variations will be cast in bronze, he says.
